FAQs

Manhole Repair and Leveling

Q. Can asphalt and concrete both be cut?

Yes, even at the same time.

Q. How wide and deep can the manhole tool cut?

The cutter is adjustable, cutting from 44″ to 58″. With adapters, the range is 28″ to 72″. Depths up to 20″ may be obtained.

Q. How does the system handle repaving?

Three options:

  1.  Remove and Replace.
  2.  Mill to the repair.
  3.  Use a high quality adjusting ring.

Q. Does the system work with masonry structures and spray coatings?

Yes. It also works well for manholes in grassed areas (offroad).

Q. What about: Frost heave, salt damage, different material expansion coefficients?

Frost heave is not a problem for the repair. Salt damage causes the repair to resemble the surrounding asphalt. Coefficient differentials are negligible.

Q. Will the PVC liner support traffic loads?

The liner is non-structural. The cast in place concrete adjusting ring handles all loading.

Injection Grouting

Q. DOES AVANTI HAVE CHEMICAL GROUTS CERTIFIED FOR POTABLE WATER APPLICATIONS?

Yes. AV-202 Multigrout, AV-330 Safeguard, and AV-333 Injectaflex.  Each one has unique characteristics but all are hydrophilics used for crack injection.

Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HYDROPHILIC AND HYDROPHOBIC GROUTS?

Most importantly: Hydrophobics can go through wet/dry cycles, hydrophilics like to stay in a moist environment. Most “phobic” require some form of catalyst and a small amount of moisture to start the reaction; “philics” simply use moisture to start the reaction.

Q. CAN I USE CHEMICAL GROUT IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES?

As a general rule, we don’t recommend grouting below 40°F because the cold temperature slows down the reaction times significantly. If using a product with a catalyst you can do cup-tests with site water to determine the catalyst quantity and end result of the cured foam/gel. In actual freezing temperatures you may not have leaks in cracks to stop! If below the frost line, then the temperature at ground level may not affect the grouting operation underground. It is best to determine the temperature of the groundwater and establish an appropriate mix ratio.

Q. HOW LONG WILL CHEMICAL GROUT REPAIRS LAST?

When used properly and in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, rehabilitation with chemical grout will typically last the life of the structure.

Q. WHAT IS THE PROPER SPACING FOR DRILLING INJECTION PORTS FOR CONCRETE CRACK REPAIR?
